Summary

Children with cystic fibrosis (CF) show low levels of selenium and vitamin E, crucial antioxidants. Supplementation improved these levels, suggesting a role for these nutrients in managing CF membrane abnormalities.

Area of Science:

  • Biochemistry
  • Nutritional Science
  • Pediatrics

Context:

  • Cystic Fibrosis (CF) is characterized by abnormal fatty acid turnover in membrane phospholipids.
  • Oxidative damage impacts membrane integrity.
  • Selenium and Vitamin E are key antioxidants protecting lipids.

Purpose:

  • To investigate the status of Vitamin E and Selenium in children with Cystic Fibrosis.
  • To assess the functional impact of Selenium deficiency via glutathione peroxidase activity.
  • To compare nutrient levels in untreated CF children versus those receiving treatment.

Summary:

  • 26 Cystic Fibrosis children were compared to a control group.
  • Untreated CF children exhibited very low Vitamin E and Selenium levels with reduced glutathione peroxidase activity.

Related Experiment Videos

  • Children receiving pancreatic enzyme replacement and Vitamin E supplementation showed milder deficiencies.
  • Impact:

    • Combined deficiency of Vitamin E and Selenium may contribute to membrane abnormalities in Cystic Fibrosis.
    • Findings highlight the potential role of antioxidant supplementation in CF management.
    • Establishes a link between nutrient status and CF pathophysiology.
