Teeth01:15

Teeth

1.5K
The formation of teeth, also known as odontogenesis, is a complex process that begins in utero, around the sixth week of embryonic development. There are three stages to this process: the bud stage, the cap stage, and the bell stage.
In the bud stage, the tooth germ (an aggregation of cells) starts to form in the developing jawbone. During the cap stage, the tooth germ differentiates into enamel organ, dental papilla, and dental sac, which will later develop into the tooth's enamel, dentin...

Tooth Anatomy

1.9K
The human tooth enables us to eat a variety of foods, speak clearly, and even aid in shaping our faces. Teeth are composed of various elements that work together. Here's a detailed look at the anatomy of a human tooth.
The Crown, Neck, and Root
The visible part of the tooth is referred to as the crown. It's covered by enamel, the hardest substance in the human body. The crown is uniquely shaped for each type of tooth, allowing for different functions such as cutting, tearing, or...

Bone Remodeling01:40

Bone Remodeling

40.1K
Bone remodeling is a continuous and balanced process of bone resorption by osteoclasts and bone formation by osteoblasts. In adults, it helps maintain bone mass and calcium homeostasis. While mechanical stress can stimulate turnover as part of the normal maintenance and reparative process, several hormones also regulate bone remodeling.

Summary

The successional dental lamina (SDL) of permanent teeth remains dormant until deciduous teeth erupt. This study in miniature pigs reveals the eruption of primary teeth triggers the development of the permanent tooth bud.

Area of Science:

  • Developmental Biology
  • Oral Biology
  • Mammalian Development

Background:

  • Cyclical renewal of integumentary organs like hair, feathers, and teeth is common, but the transition mechanism from resting to initiation stages is unclear.
  • Tooth replacement in humans involves deciduous and permanent dentitions, with the successional dental lamina (SDL) of permanent teeth forming early but developing slowly.
  • The process by which the resting SDL transitions to the initiation stage within the mandible is poorly understood.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the mechanism regulating the transition of the successional dental lamina (SDL) from a resting to an active developmental stage.
  • To identify the trigger for permanent tooth bud initiation in diphyodont mammals.

Main Methods:

  • Utilized the miniature pig, a diphyodont large mammal model, for studying tooth development.
  • Observed the developmental timing of the successional dental lamina (SDL) in relation to deciduous tooth (DT) eruption.

Main Results:

  • The successional dental lamina (SDL) of permanent teeth (PT) was detected early in embryonic development.
  • The SDL of PT did not initiate the transition to the bud stage until the eruption of the deciduous tooth (DT) commenced.
  • This finding suggests a critical temporal link between deciduous tooth eruption and permanent tooth development.

Conclusions:

  • Deciduous tooth eruption acts as a crucial signal or prerequisite for the initiation of permanent tooth development.
  • The study elucidates a key regulatory event in the diphyodont tooth replacement cycle.
  • Understanding this mechanism provides insights into mammalian dental development and potential therapeutic targets.
