The thermodynamically defined quantity p(a H γ Cl) is a useful acidity function for measuring the acidic or basic character of electrolytic solutions. This function can be evaluated from electromotive force data (E) for cells without liquid junction consisting of one electrode reversible to hydrogen ions and one electrode reversible to chloride ions.
