Area of Science:

  • Ophthalmology
  • Automotive Engineering
  • Human Factors

Background:

  • Headlight glare from Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS) can impair driver vision.
  • Objective measurement tools are needed to assess the effectiveness of anti-glare technologies.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To validate the Driver Ecological Glare Test (DEGT) for measuring headlight glare.
  • To compare the DEGT with a laboratory-based glare test.

Main Methods:

  • Twenty-four participants (55-70 years) underwent visual examinations and halo size measurements using the Vision Monitor.
  • On-field nighttime testing was conducted at the UTAC CERAM test track using the DEGT for disability glare assessment.

Main Results:

  • A significant correlation was observed between the DEGT and the laboratory glare test.
  • Bland-Altman analysis indicated good agreement, with a bias of 73.7 arcmin in halo size measurements.

Conclusions:

  • The DEGT is a validated method for assessing halo size.
  • The DEGT is suitable for evaluating the effectiveness of anti-glare devices in real-world driving conditions.
