It begins with a transition from wakefulness to sleep, known as the light sleep phase, followed by the restorative deep sleep phase, essential for physical recovery and growth. The cycle concludes with the Rapid Eye Movement (REM) phase, characterized by high brain activity and vivid dreaming. Insomnia, a prevalent sleep disorder, involves difficulty falling asleep, staying...

Area of Science:

  • Occupational therapy
  • Sensory integration
  • Evidence-based practice

Background:

  • Weighted blankets are used in occupational therapy for emotional and physical regulation.
  • Existing research on weighted blanket effectiveness is limited.
  • There is a need for more research to guide clinical practice.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To systematically review and synthesize current literature on weighted blanket effectiveness.
  • To evaluate the use of weighted blankets for decreasing anxiety and insomnia.
  • To provide an impetus for future research in this area.

Main Methods:

  • Conducted a systematic literature search from January 23, 2018, to March 1, 2018.
  • Included databases such as Cochrane Library, PubMed, PsycINFO, CINAHL, OTseeker, Web of Science, and Nursing Reference Center Plus.
  • Followed Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) guidelines, including only studies using weighted blankets for deep pressure stimulation.

Main Results:

  • Included only 8 studies (4 Level I, 2 Level III, 2 Level IV).
  • Findings suggest weighted blankets may be beneficial in specific settings and populations.
  • Evidence indicates potential benefits for anxiety reduction.

Conclusions:

  • Weighted blankets may be a suitable tool for reducing anxiety.
  • Insufficient evidence currently supports their effectiveness for insomnia.
  • Further research is required to establish clinical guidelines and understand the mechanism of action.
