Summary

First trimester bleeding is common in in-vitro fertilization (IVF) pregnancies, with higher abortion rates compared to spontaneous pregnancies. Luteal insufficiency and multiple pregnancies are key risk factors for bleeding in IVF cases.

Area of Science:

  • Reproductive Medicine
  • Obstetrics & Gynecology

Background:

  • First trimester bleeding is a significant concern in early pregnancy.
  • Understanding its causes in assisted reproductive technology (ART) is crucial for improving outcomes.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the incidence and etiological factors of first trimester bleeding in pregnancies conceived via in-vitro fertilization (IVF) and ovulation induction (OI).
  • To compare bleeding rates and abortion risks between IVF, OI, and spontaneous pregnancies.

Main Methods:

  • Retrospective analysis of 72 women undergoing IVF/embryo transfer.
  • Comparison with 70 women undergoing OI and 70 with spontaneous pregnancies.
  • Evaluation of abortion rates and bleeding-associated risk factors.

Related Experiment Videos

Main Results:

  • Abortion rates were similar between IVF and OI groups but higher than in spontaneous pregnancies.
  • First trimester bleeding occurred frequently in ongoing IVF pregnancies (P < 0.01).
  • Luteal insufficiency and multiple pregnancies were linked to IVF bleeding; hyperstimulation was linked to OI bleeding.

Conclusions:

  • First trimester bleeding is a notable complication in IVF pregnancies, associated with increased abortion risk.
  • Specific risk factors differ between IVF (luteal insufficiency, multiple pregnancies) and OI (hyperstimulation).
  • Further research is needed to identify unknown etiological factors for bleeding in IVF pregnancies.
