Summary

Multiple surgeries in adult mice did not impair cognitive function, despite causing central nervous system inflammation. Cholinergic markers remained unchanged, suggesting adult brains may be resilient to short-term, repeated anesthesia and surgery.

Background:

  • Postoperative cognitive dysfunction (POCD) is a significant concern, increasing mortality and morbidity.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the impact of multiple anesthesia/surgery on cognitive function in adult mice.
  • To examine central nervous system inflammation markers (IL-6, TNF-α) and microglial activation post-multiple operations.
  • To assess changes in cholinergic markers, crucial for cognitive processes, after repeated surgical procedures.
