    Summary

This study measured sedentary behavior using thigh-worn accelerometers in the 1970 British Cohort Study. Results show high daily sitting times, with prolonged bouts linked to health factors, suggesting accelerometry

    Area of Science:

    • Epidemiology
    • Public Health
    • Biomedical Engineering

    Background:

    • Sedentary behavior measurement in large cohorts often relies on self-reports or basic activity counters.
    • Accurate assessment of free-living sedentary behavior is crucial for understanding its health implications.
    • Previous methods may lack the precision to capture nuanced sitting patterns.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To employ a gold-standard postural allocation technique for precise measurement of free-living sedentary behavior.
    • To assess the feasibility of using thigh-worn accelerometers in large-scale cohort studies.
    • To identify factors associated with higher device-measured sitting times.

    Main Methods:

    • Utilized thigh inclination and acceleration data from activPAL3 micro devices.

  • Collected continuous 7-day data from 5,346 participants in the 1970 British Cohort Study (2016-2018).
  • Analyzed sitting time, prolonged sitting bouts, and associated demographic and lifestyle factors.
  • Main Results:

    • Average daily sitting time was 9.5 hours for men and 9.0 hours for women, representing over 57% of waking hours.
    • Over 73% of participants sat for 8 or more hours daily, with prolonged bouts (≥60 minutes) comprising ~25% of sitting time.
    • Male sex, obesity, sedentary occupation, and higher television viewing were linked to increased sitting time.

    Conclusions:

    • Thigh-worn accelerometry provides a feasible and accurate method for measuring sedentary behavior in large populations.
    • High levels of daily sitting and prolonged sitting bouts are prevalent and associated with various risk factors.
    • This methodology should be considered for future national health surveys to improve sedentary behavior assessment.
