Psychodynamic Therapy01:29

Psychodynamic Therapy

402
Psychodynamic therapies emphasize the exploration of unconscious processes and early childhood experiences as fundamental contributors to psychological difficulties. These therapies, deeply rooted in Freud's psychoanalytic theory, aim to uncover and resolve unconscious conflicts, granting individuals insights that promote emotional and behavioral healing. Contemporary psychodynamic approaches have evolved, integrating a broader range of influences and methodologies while still valuing the...

Cognitive Therapy01:25

Cognitive Therapy

713
Cognitive therapy, pioneered by Aaron T. Beck in the 1960s, is a structured approach to addressing psychological distress by focusing on the influence of thoughts on emotions and behaviors. All cognitive therapies involve the basic assumption that human beings have control over their feelings, and that how individuals feel about something depends on how they think about it. Unlike psychoanalytic methods that delve into unconscious processes or humanistic approaches emphasizing...

Interpersonal Psychotherapy01:25

Interpersonal Psychotherapy

238
Interpersonal psychotherapy (IPT) is a structured, time-limited therapeutic approach initially developed to treat depression. It integrates key concepts from psychodynamic, humanistic, and cognitive-behavioral therapies, making it a uniquely eclectic framework. The therapy is rooted in the interpersonal theories of Adolph Meyer and Harry Stack Sullivan, as well as John Bowlby's attachment theory, and focuses on the interplay between interpersonal relationships and emotional well-being.

Treatment Strategies for Psychological Disorders01:24

Treatment Strategies for Psychological Disorders

512
Treatment approaches for psychological disorders fall into three main categories: psychological, biological, and sociocultural. Each approach targets different aspects of mental health, requiring varying levels of education and training.
Psychological therapies focus on modifying emotions, thoughts, and behaviors through talking, interpreting, listening, rewarding, challenging, and modeling. Clinical psychologists, counselors, and social workers commonly practice psychotherapy. Clinical...

Depressive Disorders: Etiology

361
Depressive disorders result from a complex interplay of biological, psychological, and sociocultural factors, each contributing uniquely to the development and persistence of the condition. Understanding these factors provides critical insight into the multifaceted nature of depression.
Biological Factors in Depression
Biological predispositions significantly influence the risk of developing depressive disorders. Genetic studies highlight the role of variations in the serotonin transporter...

Depressive Disorders: MDD and Dysthymia

476
Depressive disorders are a group of mental health conditions characterized by pervasive feelings of sadness, diminished pleasure in life, and a significant impact on daily functioning. These conditions are most prevalent in individuals during their 30s and affect women at twice the rate of men. Contrary to popular belief, younger individuals are generally more susceptible to these disorders than older adults. Two key types of depressive disorders include Major Depressive Disorder (MDD) and...

Area of Science:

  • Psychiatry
  • Psychology
  • Digital Health

Background:

  • Adolescent depression is a major global health concern.
  • There is a critical need for effective and accessible mental health treatments for young people.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate the efficacy of affect-focused internet-based psychodynamic therapy (IPDT) compared to a supportive control group.
  • To determine if IPDT reduces depressive symptoms, anxiety, and improves emotion regulation in adolescents.

Main Methods:

  • A randomized controlled trial involving 76 adolescents diagnosed with major depressive disorder.
  • Participants received 8 weeks of either IPDT or a supportive internet-based control.
  • Outcomes included self-reported depressive symptoms (QIDS-A17-SR), anxiety, emotion regulation, and self-compassion, assessed at baseline, post-treatment, and 6-month follow-up.

Main Results:

  • IPDT demonstrated significant reductions in depression (d=0.82, P=.01) and anxiety (d=0.78, P<.001) compared to the control group.
  • IPDT also led to significant improvements in emotion regulation (d=0.97, P<.001) and self-compassion (d=0.65, P=.003).
  • Higher rates of response (56% vs 21%) and remission (35% vs 8%) were observed in the IPDT group, with effects sustained at 6 months.

Conclusions:

  • Affect-focused internet-based psychodynamic therapy (IPDT) is a potentially effective intervention for adolescent depression.
  • Further research is warranted to compare IPDT with other established treatments for adolescent depression.
