Reliability and Validity01:29

Reliability and Validity

Reliability and validity are two important considerations that must be made with any type of data collection. Reliability refers to the ability to consistently produce a given result. In the context of psychological research, this would mean that any instruments or tools used to collect data do so in consistent, reproducible ways.
Multiple Comparison Tests01:13

Multiple Comparison Tests

Multiple comparison test, abbreviated as MCT, is a post hoc analysis generally performed after comparing multiple samples with one or more tests. An MCT will help identify a significantly different sample among multiple samples or a factor among multiple factors.
It would be easy to compare two samples using a significance alpha level of 0.05. In other words, there is only one sample pair to be compared. However, it would be difficult to identify a significantly different sample if the number...
Self-Report Tests of Personality01:22

Self-Report Tests of Personality

Self-report inventories are objective personality assessments that use multiple-choice items or numbered scales, typically ranging from 1 (strongly disagree) to 5 (strongly agree). They are often called Likert scales after Rensis Likert. These inventories are widely used due to their ease of administration and cost-effectiveness. One of the most prominent examples is the Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory (MMPI), initially developed in the 1940s to assess abnormal personality traits.

Summary

The Military Physical Loading Questionnaire (MPLQ) shows good reliability for assessing cumulative occupational demands in UK military personnel. This tool aids in understanding injury risk factors and informing health policies.

Area of Science:

  • Occupational Health
  • Military Medicine
  • Epidemiology

Background:

  • Musculoskeletal injuries are prevalent in UK military personnel.
  • There is limited data on occupational risk factors for these injuries.
  • A new questionnaire, the Military Physical Loading Questionnaire (MPLQ), was developed to assess physical loading during military service.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To examine the test-retest reliability of the Military Physical Loading Questionnaire (MPLQ).
  • To assess the reliability of occupational and operational physical loading items.
  • To determine if reliability is influenced by duration of service.

Main Methods:

  • Test-retest reliability was evaluated using intraclass correlation coefficients (ICC) over a 4-week interval.
  • The study included 50 male UK military personnel.
  • Internal consistency was assessed using Cronbach's alpha (α) coefficients, with stratified analysis by duration of service.

Main Results:

  • Reliability for individual operational items ranged from fair to almost perfect (ICC: 0.37-0.89).
  • Overall occupational item scores demonstrated substantial to almost perfect agreement (ICC: 0.73-0.94).
  • Reliability remained consistent across different durations of service.

Conclusions:

  • The MPLQ is a reliable self-report instrument for assessing cumulative occupational loading effects in UK military personnel.
  • This tool can support the planning of UK military health policies and services.
  • Further validation in diverse military populations is recommended for future epidemiological research.
