Summary

Surgical resection is a safe and feasible treatment for small intestinal non-Hodgkin's lymphoma (NHL). This study found a 3-year survival rate of 59.6% after surgery for primary and secondary small intestinal NHL.

Background:

  • The role of surgery in treating secondary small intestinal non-Hodgkin's lymphoma (NHL) is not well-defined.
  • Small intestinal lymphomas represent a rare but significant clinical challenge.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate the efficacy and safety of surgical resection for both primary and secondary small intestinal NHL.
  • To determine the impact of surgical intervention on patient outcomes.

Main Methods:

  • Retrospective review of 20 patients with small intestinal lymphoma who underwent surgical resection (2009-2017).
  • Analysis of clinicopathological factors, surgical outcomes, postoperative complications, and overall survival (OS).

Main Results:

  • The study included 13 (65%) primary and 7 (35%) secondary small intestinal NHL cases.
  • 70% of patients had aggressive lymphomas, and 75% were Lugano stage IV.
  • A low rate of severe postoperative complications (5%) was observed, with a 3-year OS of 59.6%.

  • Surgical resection is a viable and safe therapeutic approach for small intestinal NHL.
