Background:

  • Tuberculosis (TB) remains a significant global health challenge, with drug-resistant strains posing a growing threat.
  • Understanding the epidemiology and treatment outcomes of drug-resistant TB (DR-TB) is crucial for effective control strategies.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate the characteristics, treatment outcomes, and risk factors of DR-TB cases in Qatar.
  • To assess the prevalence of DR-TB and multi-drug resistant TB (MDR-TB) in the Qatari population.

Main Methods:

  • A retrospective, records-based descriptive study analyzed 3301 microbiologically confirmed TB cases from January 2010 to March 2015.
  • Data included demographics, clinical information, drug-resistance patterns, and treatment outcomes for patients completing treatment in Qatar.

Main Results:

  • 223 (6.7%) cases exhibited resistance to at least one TB drug; 38 (1.2%) had MDR-TB.
  • Former residents of the Indian subcontinent constituted the largest demographic group (64.1%).
  • Among 85 treated DR-TB cases, cure and relapse rates were 97.6% and 2.4%, respectively.

Conclusions:

  • Migration is a significant factor influencing DR-TB in Qatar, suggesting infection likely occurred prior to arrival.
  • Standard care should include rapid sputum sampling, patient isolation, and prompt drug-susceptibility testing to combat DR-TB effectively.
