Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate the effectiveness of message frame-tailoring based on need for autonomy in smoking cessation interventions.
  • To assess the combined impact of message frame-tailoring and content-tailoring on smoking abstinence and related psychological factors.

Main Methods:

  • A randomized controlled trial with a 2x2 factorial design was employed.
  • Participants (N=273) were adult smokers intending to quit, randomly assigned to conditions with or without message frame-tailoring and content-tailoring.
  • Primary outcome was 7-day point-prevalence smoking abstinence; secondary outcomes included perceived message relevance, motivation, and sociocognitive beliefs.

Main Results:

  • Content-tailoring significantly increased smoking abstinence rates at 1 month (beta=.57, P=.02).
  • Message frame-tailoring, alone or interacting with content-tailoring, did not significantly predict smoking abstinence.
  • Both tailoring types predicted perceived message relevance, which influenced motivation; self-efficacy ultimately predicted abstinence. Frame-tailoring combined with content-tailoring significantly increased perceived message relevance for high autonomy individuals.

Conclusions:

  • Message frame-tailoring, when aligned with high autonomy needs, can augment content-tailoring in online smoking cessation interventions.
  • The current message frame-tailoring approach is not effective for individuals with a low need for autonomy.
  • Future research should explore optimizing message frame-tailoring strategies to benefit a broader range of users.
