Cortisol does not inhibit vasopressin secretion in adult sheep, even during hypotension. This suggests developmental or species-specific differences in how glucocorticoids affect vasopressin responses.

Background:

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate if glucocorticoids inhibit vasopressin secretion in adult ewes.
  • To explore potential developmental or species-specific differences in this physiological interaction.

Main Methods:

  • Adult ewes received infusions of cortisol or a vehicle control.
  • Arterial hypotension was induced using sodium nitroprusside to stimulate vasopressin secretion.
  • Plasma cortisol and vasopressin concentrations were measured.

Main Results:

  • Cortisol infusions successfully increased plasma cortisol levels in adult ewes.
  • Arterial hypotension stimulated vasopressin secretion similarly in both cortisol-infused and vehicle-infused groups.
  • No significant difference in peak plasma vasopressin concentrations was observed between the groups.

Conclusions:

  • Elevated plasma cortisol concentrations, comparable to stress levels, do not inhibit vasopressin secretion in adult sheep.
  • The findings support the hypothesis of developmental or species-specific differences in the regulation of vasopressin by glucocorticoids.
