    Summary

    This study found that high-dose vitamin C did not reduce pain after suxamethonium administration. Vitamin C levels were not linked to pain severity, and no deficiency was observed during anesthesia.

    Background:

    • Post-anesthesia muscle pains, particularly after suxamethonium, are a common patient complaint.
    • Vitamin C is an antioxidant with potential anti-inflammatory properties that might mitigate such pains.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To investigate the efficacy of high-dose vitamin C in preventing or reducing post-suxamethonium pains.
    • To explore the relationship between pre-anesthetic vitamin C levels and the incidence/severity of these pains.
    • To assess if suxamethonium administration affects vitamin C levels.

    Main Methods:

    • A double-blind, placebo-controlled trial involving 53 patients undergoing bronchoscopy.
    • Patients received either 10g of vitamin C or a placebo.
    • Buffy layer and plasma vitamin C levels were measured before and after anesthesia in a subset of patients.

    Main Results:

    • No statistically significant difference in the frequency, severity, or duration of post-suxamethonium pains was observed between the vitamin C and placebo groups.
    • No correlation was found between pre-anesthetic vitamin C levels and the occurrence or intensity of post-anesthetic pains.
    • Vitamin C levels in the buffy layer and plasma did not indicate a deficiency developing during or immediately after suxamethonium administration.

    Conclusions:

    • High-dose vitamin C administration is not effective in preventing or alleviating post-suxamethonium pains.
    • Routine vitamin C supplementation cannot be recommended for managing suxamethonium-induced myalgia.
    • Further research may be needed to explore other potential interventions for post-suxamethonium pain.
