  • To assess Spanish medical and nursing students' knowledge of ODT.
  • To examine the relationship between students' ODT knowledge and their attitudes toward organ donation.

Main Methods:

  • A multicenter, observational study involving 9,598 medical and 10,566 nursing students across Spanish universities.
  • Anonymous self-administration of a validated questionnaire (PCID-DTO-RIOS) to assess ODT knowledge and attitudes.
  • Data stratified by geographic area and academic year.

Main Results:

  • Only 20% of students perceived their ODT knowledge as good; 36% considered it scarce.
  • Students who believed their ODT knowledge was good showed a significantly more favorable attitude towards organ donation (88%) compared to those with scarce knowledge (72%).
  • Differences in perceived knowledge existed between nursing and medical students.

Conclusions:

  • A significant proportion of Spanish medical and nursing students possess inadequate knowledge regarding ODT.
  • Enhanced ODT-specific education during university training is recommended to improve knowledge and promote positive attitudes.
  • Better understanding of ODT is directly linked to a more favorable stance on organ donation.
