Favorable nursing work environments are linked to improved nurse and patient outcomes.
Generational differences in work environment perceptions exist, but preferences are less understood.

Purpose of the Study:

To identify generational preferences for favorable nursing work environments among Baby Boomer, Generation X, and Millennial nurses.

Main Methods:

A dimensional concept analysis was conducted.
Literature searches were performed in PubMed, CINAHL, and PsycINFO.
Eight articles published within the last ten years, focusing on generational preferences for nursing work environments, were reviewed.

Main Results:

Four key themes emerged: nursing practice/unit characteristics, managers/leadership, team/professional interactions, and pay/benefits.
Millennials additionally reported preferences related to personal/self aspects.
All generations expressed desires for the four primary themes.

Conclusions:

All generational cohorts prioritize benefits/pay, leadership, unit characteristics, and team interactions.
Millennials are unique in prioritizing personal aspects and self-fulfillment.
Nursing leaders should address staffing, benefits, leadership development, and team dynamics to meet diverse generational needs.
