Comparative Study of Constipation Exacerbation by Potassium Binders Using a Loperamide-Induced Constipation Model.

Sodium polystyrene sulfonate (SPS) is a safer potassium binder than calcium polystyrene sulfonate (CPS) for dialysis patients, as it causes less constipation. This study compared SPS and CPS in a rat constipation model, finding SPS improved fecal output without worsening constipation.
