Toxoplasmosis, a common cause of eye inflammation, can also present with scleritis, particularly in immunocompromised patients. Early diagnosis and treatment are crucial to prevent vision loss from this parasitic infection.

Area of Science:

  • Ophthalmology
  • Infectious Diseases
  • Parasitology

Background:

  • Toxoplasmosis is the leading infectious cause of posterior intraocular inflammation.
  • Scleritis is less commonly associated with toxoplasmosis.

Observation:

  • Five cases of toxoplasmosis presenting with scleritis were analyzed.
  • Two cases showed good response to treatment for toxoplasmosis and scleritis.
  • Three cases, including two on immunosuppressants, had refractory disease and vision loss.

Findings:

  • Pathological examination confirmed Toxoplasma gondii in enucleated eyes with severe inflammation of retina, choroid, and sclera.
  • Toxoplasmosis should be suspected in cases of scleritis with retinochoroiditis.

Implications:

Related Experiment Videos

  • Consider toxoplasmosis in the differential diagnosis of scleritis, especially in immunosuppressed individuals.
  • Prompt diagnosis and targeted therapy for toxoplasmosis may improve outcomes in patients with scleritis and retinochoroiditis.
