    Purpose of the Study:

    • To describe the context, design, implementation, and evaluation of an Academic Fellowship in Primary Care and Community-Engaged Research.

    Main Methods:

    • Enhanced traditional primary care research curriculum with expanded enrollment (including social scientists).
    • Implemented a structured CBPR seminar series and mentored community-academic partnership projects.
    • Provided teaching and mentoring experiences for fellows.

    Main Results:

    • 22 fellows enrolled (16 in CBPR track) between 2007-2016.
    • Significant pre-post gains in self-assessed CBPR competency.
    • CBPR fellows developed community-academic projects, producing over 50 articles and 70 presentations; mentored 29 student projects.

    • Dedicated faculty mentors, trusted community partners, and dedicated funding are crucial for successful CBPR training.
    • This model effectively prepares primary care researchers for genuine collaboration with vulnerable communities.
    • Graduates assume leadership roles, enhancing institutional capacity for community-engaged research, teaching, and practice, advancing health equity.
