Background:

Postgraduate training is essential for acquiring new medical knowledge.
The French system for surgical postgraduate training requires analysis.

Purpose of the Study:

To analyze the current postgraduate training system in French surgical disciplines.
To examine the legal framework and validation processes for surgical training.

Main Methods:

Retrospective study of legal texts up to December 1, 2018.
Analysis of French legal databases (LéxisNéxis®, Légifrance®) and Web of Science repository.
Level of evidence IV.

Main Results:

Postgraduate surgical training is legally mandatory in France.
Two validation systems exist: Continuing Professional Development (CPD) via the National Agency of Continuing Professional Development (NACPD), or Accreditation Council (AC) certification via the High Health Authority (HAS).
The AC route can provide automatic equivalence to the NACPD process.

Conclusions:

The continuing education process in surgery is complex and may evolve.
The goal of CPD and accreditation is to minimize patient risk and healthcare costs.
The role of professional national councils is increasing, though regulatory decrees are pending.
