Photoluminescence: Applications

920
Photoluminescence offers a wide range of applications due to its inherent sensitivity and selectivity. This technique allows for both direct and indirect analyses of the analyte. Direct quantitative analysis is possible when the analyte exhibits a favorable quantum yield for fluorescence or phosphorescence. However, an indirect analysis may be feasible if the analyte is not fluorescent or phosphorescent, or if the quantum yield is unfavorable. Indirect methods include reacting the analyte with...

Light Acquisition

9.3K
In order to produce glucose, plants need to capture sufficient light energy. Many modern plants have evolved leaves specialized for light acquisition. Leaves can be only millimeters in width or tens of meters wide, depending on the environment. Due to competition for sunlight, evolution has driven the evolution of increasingly larger leaves and taller plants, to avoid shading by their neighbors with contaminant elaboration of root architecture and mechanisms to transport water and nutrients.

    Area of Science:

    • Optoelectronics
    • Integrated Photonics
    • Semiconductor Devices

    Background:

    • Micro-light-emitting diodes (μLEDs) are crucial for high-speed optical communication.
    • Achieving high modulation bandwidth and optical power simultaneously is a key challenge.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To develop and characterize high-speed integrated μLED arrays.
    • To investigate the effect of array configuration on performance.
    • To demonstrate the potential for enhanced data transmission rates.

    Main Methods:

    • Fabrication of parallel-configured μLED arrays (2x2 to 2x5).
    • Measurement of modulation bandwidth and optical power.
    • Analysis of eye diagrams for data transmission capability.

    Main Results:

    • Achieved a highest modulation bandwidth of 615 MHz with 14 µm μLEDs.
    • Demonstrated a ~10x increase in optical power for a 2x5 array compared to a single μLED.
    • Confirmed 1 Gbps data transmission without an equalizer, evidenced by clear eye diagrams.

    Conclusions:

    • Parallel-biased integrated μLED arrays offer scalable optical power.
    • Array configuration can be tailored to enhance data transmission rates without compromising modulation bandwidth.
    • These μLED arrays show significant promise for high-speed visible light communication (VLC).
