Insights
Managing patients with COVID-19 and acute coronary syndrome remains challenging. This case study details percutaneous coronary intervention for unprotected left main disease in a COVID-19 patient, emphasizing staff protection protocols.
Area of Science:
- Interventional Cardiology
- Infectious Disease Management
- Cardiovascular Medicine
Background:
- Optimal management strategies for patients with concurrent COVID-19 and acute coronary syndrome (ACS) are not well-defined.
- Left main coronary artery disease poses significant risks, especially in critically ill patients.
Observation:
- A case of a COVID-19 positive patient presenting with unstable angina, dyspnea, and fever is described.
- The patient required percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI) for an unprotected left main coronary artery stenosis.
Findings:
- Successful percutaneous treatment of unprotected left main coronary artery disease was performed in a COVID-19 patient.
- Specific protocols were implemented in the cardiac catheterization laboratory to ensure staff safety and prevent viral transmission.
Implications:
- This case highlights a feasible approach for managing complex coronary artery disease in COVID-19 patients.
- Adherence to stringent safety measures is crucial for healthcare providers performing procedures on infectious patients.
Abstract:
The correct management of patients with coronavirus disease-2019 (COVID-19) and acute coronary syndrome is still uncertain. We describe the percutaneous treatment of an unprotected left main coronary artery in a patient who is positive for COVID-19 with unstable angina, dyspnea and fever. Particular attention will be dedicated to the measures adopted in the catheterization laboratory to protect the staff and to avoid further spread of the infection.
