Purpose of the Study:

  • To compare the effects of long-term mindfulness meditation (IBMT) and physical exercise (PE) on brain, physiology, and behavior in older adults.
  • To investigate whether IBMT and PE share common or distinct underlying mechanisms for health improvement.
  • To assess the impact of these practices on quality of life, autonomic activity, immune function, and stress hormones.

Main Methods:

  • Two groups of older adults with 10 years of experience in IBMT or PE were compared.
  • Measures included quality of life, autonomic activity (heart rate, HRV, skin conductance, respiration), immune function (sIgA), cortisol levels, and brain imaging (resting-state fMRI, structural MRI).
  • Participants were healthy older adults randomly selected from a community health project.

Main Results:

  • The IBMT group reported significantly higher quality of life and showed enhanced parasympathetic activity (higher skin conductance response, HRV).
  • The PE group exhibited a lower basal heart rate and greater respiratory amplitude.
  • IBMT was associated with higher basal sIgA, lower cortisol, stronger brain connectivity (dorsal anterior cingulate cortex-striatum), and greater striatal gray matter volume compared to PE.

Conclusions:

  • Mindfulness meditation (IBMT) and physical exercise (PE) impact health through partially different mechanisms.
  • PE primarily enhances physical fitness, whereas IBMT promotes plasticity in the central nervous system.
  • Combining physical and mental training may offer synergistic benefits for health and quality of life in aging populations.
