Campylobacter hyointestinalis: an opportunistic enteropathogen?

Summary

A case of Campylobacter hyointestinalis infection caused diarrhea in an immunocompromised patient with chronic myeloid leukemia. Treatment with erythromycin quickly resolved the symptoms, suggesting C. hyointestinalis may be an enteropathogen in at-risk individuals.

Background:

Campylobacter species are known causes of gastroenteritis.
Immunocompromised individuals are susceptible to opportunistic infections.
Chronic myeloid leukemia (CML) can impair immune function.

Observation:

A patient with CML and immunodeficiency presented with diarrhea.
Routine stool examinations did not identify other enteropathogens.
Diarrhea resolved rapidly following oral erythromycin treatment.

Findings:

This case suggests Campylobacter hyointestinalis may be enteropathogenic in humans.
The patient's immunodeficiency likely contributed to susceptibility.
Erythromycin demonstrated efficacy in treating the infection.
