Integrated family planning and immunization services are feasible for postpartum women in Benin. However, consistent implementation requires trained staff, clear referrals, and spousal engagement to improve contraceptive uptake.
Area of Science:
- Public Health
- Reproductive Health
- Health Services Research
Background:
- Integrating family planning (FP) with routine infant immunization (EPI) aims to increase postpartum contraception uptake.
- This study evaluated the implementation and client experiences of combined FP/EPI services in Benin.
Purpose of the Study:
- To assess the implementation of integrated family planning and immunization services.
- To understand postpartum women's experiences with these combined services in Benin.
Main Methods:
- A mixed-methods process evaluation was conducted at eight facilities.
- Focus group discussions with 56 postpartum women and patient flow analyses were utilized.
- Grounded theory methodology informed the exploration of women's experiences.
Main Results:
- Postpartum women positively received FP group education but found referral processes confusing.
- Birth spacing motivated contraceptive use; fear of side effects and lack of spousal engagement were barriers.
- Staffing shortages hindered service delivery in half of the evaluated facilities.
Conclusions:
- Integrated FP/EPI services are feasible and accepted by postpartum women.
- Consistent implementation requires adequate staffing, supportive supervision, and clear referral pathways.
- Addressing spousal involvement is crucial for enhancing reproductive health decision-making.
