Bacterial Phylum Tenericutes01:24

Bacterial Phylum Tenericutes

360
The phylum Tenericutes, which includes the single class Mollicutes, comprises bacteria that lack cell walls. The term "Mollicutes" derives from the Latin word mollis, meaning "soft." These organisms are among the smallest known and are commonly referred to as mycoplasmas due to the prominence of the genus Mycoplasma, which includes well-known human pathogens. Despite their inability to stain gram-positively (a result of their lack of cell walls), mycoplasmas are phylogenetically related to the...

Bacterial Phylum Planctomycetes

327
Planctomycetes are a group of morphologically distinct bacteria predominantly classified into two orders: Planctomycetales and Brocadiales. These gram-negative bacteria exhibit unique features, including division by budding and the presence of stalks or appendages. Their cells are often found in rosette arrangements, and they are notable for possessing an S-layer in their cell envelope, which is relatively uncommon among bacteria. Additionally, Planctomycetes frequently exhibit intracellular...

The Roles of Bacteria and Fungi in Plant Nutrition

46.4K
Plants have the impressive ability to create their own food through photosynthesis. However, plants often require assistance from organisms in the soil to acquire the nutrients they need to function correctly. Both bacteria and fungi have evolved symbiotic relationships with plants that help the species to thrive in a wide variety of environments.

Bacterial Phylum Actinobacteria

Coryneform bacteria are gram-positive, aerobic, nonmotile rods that exhibit irregular, club-shaped, or V-shaped arrangements. Their V-shape results from snapping division, where the inner cell wall layer forms the cross-wall, while the outer layer remains intact until it ruptures on one side, causing the daughter cells to bend away. The primary genera are Corynebacterium and Arthrobacter. Corynebacterium includes diverse species, ranging from saprophytes to pathogens like Corynebacterium...

Area of Science:

  • Microbiology
  • Bacterial Taxonomy
  • Genomics

Background:

  • The genus Methylobacterium comprises diverse methylotrophic bacteria found in various environments.
  • Lichen-associated microbial communities are increasingly recognized for their unique biodiversity.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To isolate and characterize a novel bacterial strain from a lichen sample.
  • To determine the phylogenetic and taxonomic position of the novel strain within the genus Methylobacterium.

Main Methods:

  • Isolation and cultivation of bacteria from Lepraria sp. lichen.
  • Phenotypic characterization including Gram staining, motility, and growth conditions.
  • Phylogenetic analysis based on 16S rRNA gene sequencing.
  • Chemotaxonomic analysis (ubiquinone, fatty acids, polar lipids).
  • Genomic analysis including DNA G+C content, ANI, and dDDH.

Main Results:

  • A novel Gram-negative, aerobic, methylotrophic, rod-shaped bacterium (YIM 132548^T) was isolated.
  • Phylogenetic analysis showed highest 16S rRNA gene similarity to Methylobacterium soli (97.6%) and M. durans (97.3%).
  • Genomic data (ANI, dDDH) supported its distinction from related species.
  • Chemotaxonomic data (Q-10, C18:1ω7c) aligned with the genus Methylobacterium.

Conclusions:

  • Strain YIM 132548^T represents a novel species within the genus Methylobacterium.
  • The proposed name for this new species is Methylobacterium planium sp. nov.
  • This discovery contributes to the understanding of bacterial diversity in lichen ecosystems.
