Purpose of the Study:

  • To develop a predictive model for currently relevant patch test positivity in patients with hand eczema.
  • To identify clinical factors associated with relevant patch test outcomes in hand eczema.

Main Methods:

  • Retrospective study involving 262 patients with hand eczema.
  • Data collected included age, sex, symptom duration, occupation, and atopic history.
  • A logistic regression model was developed and discrimination assessed using the area under the receiver operating characteristic curve.

Main Results:

  • 66.03% of patients had positive patch tests, with 28.6% being of current relevance.
  • Factors associated with current relevance included hairdresser-aesthetician occupation, personal atopy history, male sex, and symptom duration over 6 months.

Conclusions:

  • Occupation, sex, and atopy history significantly influence the relevance of patch test results in Spanish patients with hand eczema.
  • The findings suggest that chronic eczema diagnosis alone may not always warrant patch testing.
  • Further research with larger cohorts is necessary to validate the clinical utility of predictive models for patch testing in hand eczema.
