Background:

Societal aging necessitates increased geriatric knowledge among healthcare professionals.
Effective educational tools are needed to cater to the learning styles of nurses and nursing students.
Serioussoap.nl, a Dutch and English educational tool, combines video gaming and storytelling to enhance geriatric knowledge.

Purpose of the Study:

To assess the impact of Serioussoap.nl on the geriatric knowledge of nurses and nursing students.
To evaluate the usability of Serioussoap.nl as an educational resource.

Main Methods:

A mixed-methods approach was employed, including a quantitative pretest-posttest design and qualitative methods.
Participants included vocational nursing students (n=119), baccalaureate nursing students (n=77), and vocational nurses (n=44) in the Netherlands.
Geriatric knowledge was measured using the Knowledge of Older People Questionnaire (KOP-Q); usability was assessed through observations, focus groups, and interviews.

Main Results:

A statistically significant increase in geriatric knowledge was observed, with an average score improvement of 7.8% on the KOP-Q (p < 0.001).
Qualitative data indicated that Serioussoap.nl supported reflective learning and promoted meaningful learning experiences.
The tool was found to be a suitable and effective educational method.

Conclusions:

Serioussoap.nl effectively enhances geriatric knowledge among nursing students and professionals.
The platform is perceived as a valuable and appropriate educational tool for improving geriatric care competencies.
The integration of gaming and storytelling in Serioussoap.nl supports effective learning in geriatrics.
