Summary

Blunt facial trauma can lead to paediatric orbital cellulitis with a subperiosteal abscess. Surgical drainage of this abscess, even when laterally located, resulted in a satisfactory outcome.

Background:

  • Orbital cellulitis is a serious condition often associated with sinusitis.
  • Subperiosteal abscesses can cause significant ocular compromise.
  • Blunt facial trauma is an uncommon cause of orbital cellulitis.

Observation:

  • A paediatric patient presented with orbital cellulitis one day after blunt facial trauma.
  • A significant subperiosteal abscess developed lateral to the globe, causing ocular compromise.

Findings:

  • The subperiosteal abscess was successfully drained via external incisions.
  • Sinus washout was performed concurrently.
  • The patient experienced a satisfactory outcome following surgical intervention.

Implications:

  • Trauma can be a significant non-sinogenic factor in paediatric orbital cellulitis.
  • The location of a subperiosteal abscess influences surgical approach.
  • Lateral subperiosteal abscesses may require modified surgical techniques for drainage.
