Area of Science:

  • Child Psychology
  • Trauma Studies
  • Socioeconomic Factors in Health

Background:

  • Poverty and trauma significantly impact young children's behavior and emotional well-being.
  • Early intervention is crucial for addressing trauma symptoms in vulnerable populations.
  • Existing treatments may not adequately address the needs of very young children in poverty.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate the effectiveness of a home-based, parent-and-child therapy program for toddlers and preschoolers with trauma symptoms living in poverty.
  • To assess improvements in challenging behaviors, emotional symptoms, caregiver-child relationships, and treatment adherence.
  • To identify clinical challenges and advantages of home-based therapy for this population.

Main Methods:

  • A randomized control trial involving 64 children aged 5 and younger with trauma symptoms and from low-income families.
  • Participants were assigned to either immediate treatment or a waitlist control group.
  • Post-treatment and six-week follow-up measures assessed behavioral and emotional outcomes, and caregiver-child interactions.

Main Results:

  • Significant improvements were observed in the immediate treatment group compared to the waitlist control group on all post-treatment measures.
  • Following treatment, the waitlist group also showed significant improvements at six-week follow-up.
  • Key outcomes included reduced challenging behaviors, fewer trauma-related emotional symptoms, enhanced caregiver-child relationships, and better caregiver adherence.

Conclusions:

  • Home-based, parent-and-child therapy is effective for treating trauma symptoms in low-income toddlers and preschoolers.
  • Early intervention in a home setting can yield significant positive outcomes for children and families facing poverty and trauma.
  • The study highlights the feasibility and benefits of delivering specialized therapeutic services within the child's natural environment.
