Background:

  • Cognitive decline is a significant concern in aging populations.
  • Cognitive reserve, often linked to education, and relational reserve, encompassing social networks and support, are proposed to buffer against cognitive decline.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the association between cognitive reserve (education) and relational reserve (family network size, emotional support) with executive functioning decline over six years.
  • To examine potential interactions between education and network size in relation to executive function changes in older adults.

Main Methods:

  • Longitudinal study analyzing data from 897 older adults (mean age 74.33 at baseline).
  • Executive functioning assessed using Trail Making Test (TMT) completion time over two waves, six years apart.
  • Latent change score modeling was used to test for moderation effects.

Main Results:

  • A significant interaction was found between education and family network size.
  • For individuals with higher cognitive reserve (education), greater relational reserve predicted a slower decline in executive functioning (smaller increase in TMT time).
  • This protective effect of relational reserve was not significant for individuals with lower cognitive reserve.

Conclusions:

  • Cognitive and relational reserves are intertwined and interact to influence cognitive aging.
  • The findings support the hypothesis that combined reserves from different domains offer enhanced protection against cognitive decline in later life.
