Rollover Protective Structures (ROPS) can prevent tractor fatalities, but many tractors lack them. A new Computer-based ROPS Design Program (CRDP) and lift assist system were developed to improve ROPS availability and usability.
Area of Science:
- Agricultural Engineering
- Occupational Safety
- Mechanical Design
Background:
- Hundreds of agricultural tractor rollover fatalities occur annually in the U.S.
- An estimated 1.6 million tractors lack Rollover Protective Structures (ROPS).
- Existing ROPS may not be commercially available for some tractor models or may not be used correctly.
Purpose of the Study:
- To develop a Computer-based ROPS Design Program (CRDP) for rapid ROPS generation.
- To design and test a foldable ROPS lift assist system.
- To develop and evaluate a model for determining critical ROPS height (CRH).
Main Methods:
- The CRDP generates ROPS designs based on tractor weight and dimensions.
- ROPS designs were tested against SAE J2194 static standards.
- A lift assist mechanism was engineered to reduce ROPS raising and lowering torque.
- A model was developed to calculate CRH using vehicle dimensions and center of gravity.
Main Results:
- CRDP-generated ROPS for the Allis Chalmers 5040 tractor passed SAE J2194 tests.
- The foldable ROPS lift assist reduced raising torque from 90 Nm to under 50 Nm.
- The CRH model was developed and evaluated.
Conclusions:
- The CRDP offers a viable solution for designing effective ROPS.
- The lift assist system enhances the usability of foldable ROPS.
- The CRH model aids in designing safer ROPS for various vehicles.
