Summary

A new lift-assist mechanism for foldable rollover protective structures (FROPS) on agricultural tractors significantly improves safety. This design allows operators to easily raise FROPS from their seat, preventing fatalities during rollovers.

Background:

Agricultural tractor rollovers pose a significant risk, often resulting in fatalities when foldable rollover protective structures (FROPS) are not deployed.
Operators frequently leave FROPS in the lowered position due to the time-consuming and strenuous nature of manual deployment, compromising safety.

Purpose of the Study:

To design, manufacture, and test an innovative lift-assist mechanism for FROPS.
The mechanism aims to enable operators to raise and lower FROPS from the tractor seat, enhancing protection during rollovers.

Main Methods:

The lift-assist design was developed based on FROPS actuation forces, dimensional analysis, and ergonomics standards (SAE J898/ISO 6682, SAE J1814).
A universal lift-assist lever was constructed and tested on three FROPS of varying sizes, ensuring retrofittability without compromising structural integrity.

Main Results:

The developed lift-assist mechanism successfully met ergonomics engineering standards for operator comfort and reach.
Operator actuation forces were recorded below the 75 N maximum allowable limit.
The design incorporates an energy-absorbing torsional spring to support heavier FROPS.
