Introspection01:29

Introspection

160
Introspection, long upheld as a reliable route to self-knowledge, involves examining one's thoughts, emotions, and mental processes. It underpins many psychological practices, from mindfulness meditation to psychotherapy and self-help strategies. However, empirical evidence challenges the accuracy of introspection as a means of understanding oneself.Limitations of Introspective InsightSeminal work by Nisbett and Wilson demonstrated that individuals are frequently unaware of the true causes...

Self-Discrepancy and Its Effects

225
Self-discrepancy theory explains how people compare their actual self to their ideal and ought selves and how mismatches between these self-guides can lead to emotional distress. Developed by E. Tory Higgins, the theory distinguishes among three components of self-concept: the actual self, the ideal self, and the ought self. These refer respectively to how individuals perceive themselves, how they aspire to be, and how they believe they are obligated to be. Emotional well-being, self-esteem,...

Self-Awareness and Its Effects01:21

Self-Awareness and Its Effects

210
Self-awareness is a psychological state in which the individual becomes the focal point of their attention. This inward focus transforms the self into an object of contemplation and assessment, influencing how individuals perceive their actions and their alignment with personal and societal standards.Triggers and Contexts for Self-AwarenessSelf-awareness can be activated by external stimuli that make individuals visually or audibly aware of themselves, such as mirrors, cameras, or recordings.

Self-Discrepancy Theory

18.8K
One influential perspective on what motivates people's behavior is detailed in Tory Higgin's self-discrepancy theory (Higgins, 1987). He proposed that people hold disagreeing internal representations of themselves that lead to different emotional states.

Empathy02:34

Empathy

10.0K
Some researchers suggest that altruism operates on empathy. Empathy is the capacity to understand another person’s perspective, to feel what he or she feels. An empathetic person makes an emotional connection with others and feels compelled to help (Batson, 1991). Empathy can be expressed in several ways, including cognitive, affective, and motor.

The Scientific Method02:40

The Scientific Method

64.5K
Research is what makes the difference between facts and opinions. Facts are observable realities, and opinions are personal judgments, conclusions, or attitudes that may or may not be accurate. In the scientific community, facts can be established only using evidence collected through empirical research.

Summary

Self-compassion, but not mindfulness, was linked to better physiological regulation of emotional stress. This suggests self-compassion plays a key role in managing distress responses.

Area of Science:

  • Psychology
  • Psychophysiology
  • Health Science

Background:

  • Dispositional mindfulness and self-compassion correlate with reduced emotional distress.
  • Self-compassion may offer a stronger buffer against distress than mindfulness.
  • Previous research primarily used self-report measures for emotional distress.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the relationship between dispositional self-compassion and mindfulness with psychophysiological flexibility.
  • To examine vagally mediated heart rate variability (vmHRV) as a measure of emotional stress reactivity.
  • To expand on self-report findings by including a psychophysiological indicator.

Main Methods:

  • Fifty-three university students completed the Five Facet Mindfulness Questionnaire (FFMQ) and Self-Compassion Scale (SCS).
  • Resting heart rate was measured via a 5-minute electrocardiogram.
  • Linear hierarchical regression analyses assessed the unique and common variance of FFMQ and SCS on vmHRV.

Main Results:

  • Higher Self-Compassion Scale (SCS) scores were significantly associated with higher vagally mediated heart rate variability (vmHRV).
  • Self-compassion uniquely explained 7% of the variance in vmHRV.
  • The Five Facet Mindfulness Questionnaire (FFMQ) total scores did not show a significant association with vmHRV.

Conclusions:

  • Preliminary evidence suggests dispositional self-compassion is linked to enhanced psychophysiological regulation.
  • Self-compassion's association with vmHRV appears independent of mindfulness.
  • These findings highlight self-compassion's potential role in managing emotional arousal.
