Background:

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the mechanisms by which vasopressin (VS) stimulates colonic peristalsis.
  • To quantify the propulsive and fluid transport effects of VS in the human colon.

Main Methods:

  • Transit time of radioopaque markers was measured in healthy subjects after intramuscular VS injection.
  • Electromyographic activity in the left colon was recorded using an intraluminal device.
  • Ileostomy and colostomy fluid outflow was measured following VS administration.

Main Results:

  • VS significantly increased the transit of markers through both the right and left colon compared to NaCl.
  • Intramuscular VS injection led to a significant increase in propagating electrical spike bursts in the left colon.
  • Fluid output from colostomies increased substantially after VS administration compared to NaCl.
