Bullying02:04

Bullying

8.7K
A modern form of aggression is bullying. As you learn in your study of child development, socializing and playing with other children is beneficial for children’s psychological development. However, as you may have experienced as a child, not all play behavior has positive outcomes. Some children are aggressive and want to play roughly. Other children are selfish and do not want to share toys. One form of negative social interactions among children that has become a national concern is...

Traumatic Memory01:20

Traumatic Memory

450
Emotionally traumatic events often lead to memories that are exceptionally vivid and enduring, sometimes persisting with remarkable clarity throughout an individual's life. A classic example of this phenomenon is a person who survives a car accident. Even years later, they may recall every detail of the event with startling accuracy — the screeching of the tires, the jarring impact, and the acrid smell of burning rubber. Such vividness contrasts sharply with how an individual...

Repressed Memory01:16

Repressed Memory

393
Repressed memories are a psychological phenomenon where memories of traumatic events are unconsciously blocked from a person's awareness. This process occurs as a defense mechanism, protecting the mind from the emotional impact of distressing or painful experiences. For example, a person who has experienced childhood trauma may grow up with no conscious recollection of the event. In such cases, the memories are thought to be buried deep within the subconscious, inaccessible to the conscious...

Bystander Effect

10.1K
The discussion of bullying highlights the problem of witnesses not intervening to help a victim. This is a common occurrence, as the following well-publicized event demonstrates. In 1964, in Queens, New York, a 19-year-old woman named Kitty Genovese was attacked by a person with a knife near the back entrance to her apartment building and again in the hallway inside her apartment building. When the attack occurred, she screamed for help numerous times and eventually died from her stab wounds.

Fundamental Attribution Error01:14

Fundamental Attribution Error

13.6K
According to some social psychologists, people tend to overemphasize internal factors as explanations—or attributions—for the behavior of other people. They tend to assume that the behavior of another person is a trait of that person, and to underestimate the power of the situation on the behavior of others. They tend to fail to recognize when the behavior of another is due to situational variables, and thus to the person’s state. This erroneous assumption is...

Area of Science:

  • Psychology
  • Sociology
  • Public Health

Background:

  • Childhood trauma is a widespread issue with severe psychological consequences.
  • Early victimization can trap individuals in cycles of abuse.
  • A history of childhood abuse is common among perpetrators of adult abuse.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To assess adult patients with a history of child abuse who exhibited abusive behaviors.
  • To investigate the link between childhood victimization and adult perpetration.

Main Methods:

  • Retrospective review of 3694 patient files from a private outpatient clinic.
  • Data collection on history of abuse, victimization, substance abuse, and adult abusive behaviors.

Main Results:

  • 29.10% of patients reported childhood abuse (1075 individuals).
  • 19.44% of those with childhood abuse history engaged in abusive behaviors as adults.
  • Substance abuse was more prevalent in individuals with a history of abuse (36.6%) compared to those without (28.36%).

Conclusions:

  • A significant portion of individuals with childhood abuse histories perpetrate abuse in adulthood.
  • Intervention by mental health professionals and policymakers can disrupt the intergenerational transmission of abuse.
  • Addressing childhood abuse is vital for societal well-being and preventing future cycles of violence.
