Area of Science:

  • Marine Biology
  • Parasitology
  • Pharmacology

Background:

  • Chagas disease, caused by Trypanosoma cruzi, lacks effective treatments.
  • Microalgae are rich sources of bioactive metabolites with potential antiparasitic properties.
  • Certain green and red algae species exhibit anti-protozoan activity.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the antiparasitic effects of various microalgae extracts.
  • To evaluate the efficacy of aqueous, methanolic, and ethanolic extracts against T. cruzi.

Main Methods:

  • Preparation of aqueous, methanolic, and ethanolic extracts from different microalgae species.
  • Assessment of trypanocidal activity against extracellular trypomastigotes and intracellular amastigotes.
  • Phytochemical screening for phenolic compounds, pigments, and terpenoids.

Main Results:

  • Methanolic extracts of S. obliquus and T. suecica demonstrated trypanocidal activity.
  • Ethanolic extracts of C. reinhardtii and T. suecica were effective against T. cruzi stages.
  • Ethanolic extract of C. reinhardtii enhanced the efficacy of nifurtimox.

Conclusions:

  • Microalgae extracts, especially ethanolic extract of C. reinhardtii, show promise as natural antichagasic agents.
  • Further research into these extracts could lead to novel drug development for Chagas disease.
