Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the relationship between pain catastrophizing, sensory processing patterns, and headache severity in adolescents with episodic migraine.
  • To compare sensory processing patterns between adolescents with episodic migraine and healthy controls.

Main Methods:

  • 92 adolescents (13-18 years; 40 with episodic migraine, 52 controls) participated.
  • Sensory processing was assessed using the Adolescent/Adult Sensory Profile (AASP).
  • Pain catastrophizing was measured by the Pain Catastrophizing Scale for children (PCS-ch); headache disability by PedMIDAS.

Main Results:

  • Adolescents with migraine exhibited reduced sensory seeking compared to controls.
  • Higher levels of rumination and helplessness correlated with increased migraine pain severity.
  • Sensory avoidance predicted higher migraine-related disability.
  • Migraine patients showed significantly higher pain catastrophizing, particularly in rumination and helplessness.

Conclusions:

  • Sensory processing difficulties are prevalent in adolescents with episodic migraine.
  • Sensory avoidance may be associated with pain experience, pain catastrophizing, and disability levels in this population.
