Purpose of the Study:

  • To assess the safety and efficacy of ultrasonically nebulized distilled water (UNDW) inhalations for modulating cough reflex thresholds.
  • To investigate UNDW inhalations as a potential treatment for silent aspiration by targeting cough sensitivity.
  • To evaluate changes in citric acid cough thresholds following sensory stimulation.

Main Methods:

  • Healthy adults (n=24) were randomized into high-intensity UNDW, low-intensity UNDW, or saline control groups.
  • Sensory stimulation via inhalations was administered daily for 4 consecutive days.
  • Citric acid cough thresholds and spirometry were measured at baseline, Day 3, and Day 5.

Main Results:

  • No bronchoconstriction was observed in any group during the protocol.
  • Both high-intensity and low-intensity UNDW inhalations significantly decreased citric acid cough thresholds compared to saline.
  • UNDW inhalations demonstrated a sensitization effect on cough sensitivity.
