Ethical Issues01:27

Ethical Issues

1.9K
Nurses are essential in patient care, upholding the ethical principles of their profession and effectively navigating ethical dilemmas. Neglecting ethical issues can lead to inadequate patient care, compromised therapeutic relationships, and moral distress among healthcare workers.

Obedience01:08

Obedience

35.1K
According to obedience research, we may harm others under the forceful pressures of an authority figure (Milgram, 1974). How about if the inappropriate orders were delivered with less force? The increasing interdependence between nurses and physicians compelled Hofling and his colleagues to explore nurses’ reactions to a potentially harmful medical request made by the perceived authority figure, the doctor (Hofling, Brotzman, Dalrymple, Graves, & Pierce, 1966). In this situation,...

Self-Discrepancy Theory

18.8K
One influential perspective on what motivates people's behavior is detailed in Tory Higgin's self-discrepancy theory (Higgins, 1987). He proposed that people hold disagreeing internal representations of themselves that lead to different emotional states.

Elements Crucial for Effective Psychotherapy01:25

Elements Crucial for Effective Psychotherapy

263
Research has highlighted several critical factors that influence the effectiveness of psychotherapy, such as the therapeutic alliance, the therapist, and the client.
The Therapeutic Alliance
The therapeutic alliance refers to the relationship between the therapist and the client. The alliance strengthens when the therapist and the client engage in a nurturing, supportive, trusting, empathetic, and respectful relationship, improving therapeutic outcomes. Therapists must monitor this relationship...

The Placebo Effect01:54

The Placebo Effect

6.7K
The placebo effect occurs when people's expectations or beliefs influence or determine their experience in a given situation. In other words, simply expecting something to happen can actually make it happen.

Regression Toward the Mean01:52

Regression Toward the Mean

6.8K
Regression toward the mean (“RTM”) is a phenomenon in which extremely high or low values—for example, and individual’s blood pressure at a particular moment—appear closer to a group’s average upon remeasuring. Although this statistical peculiarity is the result of random error and chance, it has been problematic across various medical, scientific, financial and psychological applications. In particular, RTM, if not taken into account, can interfere when...

Summary

Patient dissatisfaction with general practitioners influences the use of complementary and alternative medicine (CAM) for low back pain. This effect holds for both alternative and complementary CAM use, except for osteopaths in complementary care.

Area of Science:

  • Health Services Research
  • Complementary and Alternative Medicine
  • Pain Management

Background:

  • Low back pain is a prevalent condition often managed with both conventional medical care and complementary and alternative medicine (CAM).
  • Patient satisfaction with conventional care is a potential factor influencing the choice to use CAM.
  • Distinguishing between alternative and complementary use of CAM is crucial for understanding patient behavior.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the dissatisfaction hypothesis regarding the use of CAM practitioners by low back pain patients.
  • To differentiate between the alternative and complementary use of CAM in relation to medical care.

Main Methods:

  • A cross-sectional study was conducted.
  • The study included a sample of 2,056 adults residing in metropolitan France.

Main Results:

  • Increased satisfaction with a general practitioner was associated with a decreased likelihood of alternative CAM use (OR: 0.990, 95% CI 0.984-0.996).
  • Higher satisfaction with medical care correlated with a reduced likelihood of complementary CAM use, excluding osteopaths (OR: 0.984, 95% CI 0.972-0.996).

Conclusions:

  • The findings support the dissatisfaction hypothesis as an explanation for why patients with low back pain utilize CAM, for both alternative and complementary purposes.
  • However, the dissatisfaction hypothesis does not appear to apply to the complementary use of osteopaths.
