    Background:

    • Streptococcus agalactiae frequently colonizes the genitourinary tract.
    • Urinary tract infections (UTIs) are common, but S. agalactiae is a rare causative agent.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To investigate the incidence and characteristics of S. agalactiae as a cause of UTIs.
    • To identify patient populations at higher risk for S. agalactiae UTIs.

    Main Methods:

    • Retrospective analysis of UTI cases over two years at a London teaching hospital.
    • Identification and serotyping of S. agalactiae isolates from urine cultures.

    Main Results:

    • S. agalactiae accounted for approximately 1% of all UTIs studied.
    • Forty-eight patients had S. agalactiae UTIs; 43 were female.
    • Infections were associated with renal transplantation, chronic renal failure, and post-hysterectomy status.
    • Serotypes III and II were the most common isolates, mirroring their prevalence in the genitourinary tract.

    Conclusions:

    • Despite frequent colonization, S. agalactiae is an uncommon cause of UTIs.
    • Certain clinical conditions increase susceptibility to S. agalactiae UTIs.
    • Serotype distribution in UTIs reflects that in asymptomatic colonization.
