When T cells with CD4 markers are activated, they give rise to two types of effector cells: helper T cells and regulatory T cells. Meanwhile, T cells with CD8 markers differentiate into effector cytotoxic T cells. Anti-tumor necrosis factor α (anti-TNF-α) therapy improved aggrecan remodeling in female rheumatoid arthritis (RA) patients. Treatment reduced aggrecan fragments and key enzymes, indicating a beneficial impact on cartilage health.

  • Anti-tumor necrosis factor α (anti-TNF-α) therapy is a common treatment for RA.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate the impact of 15-month anti-TNF-α therapy on aggrecan turnover in female RA patients.
  • To assess changes in serum levels of aggrecan fragments and related enzymes before and during treatment.

Main Methods:

  • Serum samples from healthy controls and female RA patients (treated with TNFαI and methotrexate) were analyzed.
  • Immunoassay methods were used to measure serum levels of CS846, aggrecan fragments (AGC), ADAMTS-4, ADAMTS-5, and TIMP-3.

  • Anti-TNF-α therapy positively influences aggrecan remodeling in female RA patients.
  • The treatment appears to restore a more balanced aggrecan turnover, potentially mitigating cartilage damage.
