Rous Sarcoma Virus (RSV) and Cancer

6.0K
Rous Sarcoma virus or RSV was discovered by F. Peyton Rous in the year 1911 as a filterable transmissible agent that could cause tumors in chickens. He won a Nobel Prize for this discovery in 1966. His experiments clearly demonstrated that some cancers could be caused by infectious agents and led to the discovery of many more cancer-causing viruses in animals as well as humans.
RSV is a retrovirus that contains two copies of a plus-strand  RNA genome. Its genome consists of four main open...

Summary
This summary is machine-generated.

Surveillance for small renal masses is increasing. This case highlights a rare 2 cm sarcomatoid renal cell carcinoma, challenging the traditional 3 cm size threshold for aggressive sarcomatoid dedifferentiation.

Area of Science:

  • Oncology
  • Urology
  • Pathology

Background:

  • Increased incidental detection of small renal masses necessitates understanding their behavior.
  • Sarcomatoid pathology in renal tumors is linked to aggressive disease and poor prognosis.
  • Traditionally, sarcomatoid dedifferentiation is observed in renal malignancies around 3 cm.

Observation:

  • A 65-year-old male presented with a small renal mass.
  • Imaging revealed a 2 cm renal mass.
  • Pathological examination confirmed sarcomatoid differentiation.

Findings:

  • The patient had a 2 cm renal cell carcinoma with sarcomatoid features.
  • This represents the smallest reported renal tumor with sarcomatoid differentiation.
  • This finding challenges the established size threshold for sarcomatoid dedifferentiation.

Implications:

  • Early-stage sarcomatoid renal cell carcinoma can occur below the previously recognized 3 cm threshold.
  • This case may influence surveillance and treatment strategies for small renal masses.
  • Further research is needed to understand the early development of sarcomatoid features in renal malignancies.
