Background:

A significant global burden of surgical disease disproportionately affects low- and middle-income countries (LMICs).
The growing field of global surgery necessitates addressing ethical considerations in international collaborations.
Current guidelines for ethical challenges in global surgical partnerships are lacking.

Purpose of the Study:

To synthesize existing literature on ethics in global surgery.
To identify knowledge gaps in the ethical considerations of global surgical collaborations.

Main Methods:

A scoping review of relevant databases was conducted.
Literature addressing ethical considerations in global surgery was identified.
Grounded theory was used for content analysis to identify themes and knowledge gaps.

Main Results:

Four ethical domains were identified: clinical care, education, research, and collaborations.
Most literature focused on clinical care and originated from high-income countries (HICs) (80%).
The majority of publications were editorials/commentaries (69.1%), with limited original research (12.7%).

Conclusions:

Literature on global surgery ethics is sparse, predominantly from HICs, and focused on clinical care and short-term missions.
The perspective of LMICs, as recipients of global surgical initiatives, is underrepresented.
There is a critical need for more research on the ethics of sustainable collaborations and partnerships in global surgery.
