Methods of Documentation II: POMR

1.3K
The Problem-Oriented Medical Record (POMR) revolutionized medical record-keeping by introducing a systematic approach focusing on the patient's problems rather than merely listing symptoms. Dr. Lawrence Weed's introduction of this method in the 1960s marked a significant advancement in medical documentation. The POMR framework consists of four key components: the database, problem list, plan of care, and progress notes.

Longitudinal Research02:20

Longitudinal Research

13.0K
Sometimes we want to see how people change over time, as in studies of human development and lifespan. When we test the same group of individuals repeatedly over an extended period of time, we are conducting longitudinal research. Longitudinal research is a research design in which data-gathering is administered repeatedly over an extended period of time. For example, we may survey a group of individuals about their dietary habits at age 20, retest them a decade later at age 30, and then again...

Obedience01:08

Obedience

35.1K
According to obedience research, we may harm others under the forceful pressures of an authority figure (Milgram, 1974). How about if the inappropriate orders were delivered with less force? The increasing interdependence between nurses and physicians compelled Hofling and his colleagues to explore nurses’ reactions to a potentially harmful medical request made by the perceived authority figure, the doctor (Hofling, Brotzman, Dalrymple, Graves, & Pierce, 1966). In this situation,...

Longitudinal Studies01:26

Longitudinal Studies

402
Longitudinal studies are also widely used in other medical and social science fields. For instance, in cardiovascular research, they can monitor patients' health over decades to identify risk factors for heart disease, such as high cholesterol or smoking, and evaluate the long-term effectiveness of preventive measures. Similarly, in mental health studies, researchers might follow individuals from adolescence into adulthood to understand the development and progression of conditions like...

Summary

Program administrator burnout fluctuates during the academic year, with personal and work-related burnout decreasing by the third quarter. Feelings of isolation correlate with increased burnout among medical education program administrators.

Area of Science:

  • Medical Education
  • Occupational Health
  • Psychology

Background:

  • Burnout among program administrators (PAs) in medical education is not well understood.
  • The impact of PA burnout on the trainee environment requires further investigation.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To examine burnout variations in a national cohort of PAs over one year.
  • To explore the relationship between perceived support, isolation, and PA burnout.

Main Methods:

  • A 1-year longitudinal study assessed burnout using the Copenhagen Burnout Inventory (0-100 score).
  • Generalized estimating equations modeled changes in burnout levels throughout the academic year (July 2017-June 2018).
  • One-way ANOVA tested differences in burnout scores across response levels.

Main Results:

  • Burnout scores decreased significantly by the third quarter (March 2018) for personal and work-related burnout.
  • Client-related burnout was lowest in September 2017.
  • Increased feelings of isolation in June 2018 correlated with higher personal, work-related, and client-related burnout scores.

Conclusions:

  • Program administrator burnout levels vary throughout the academic year.
  • Increased feelings of isolation are associated with elevated burnout among program administrators in medical education.
