Skin Cancer

5.6K
Skin cancer is a type of cancer that occurs when there is an abnormal growth of skin cells, usually triggered by damage to the DNA within the skin cells. It is primarily caused by exposure to ultraviolet (UV) radiation from the sun or artificial sources like tanning beds. Skin cancer is the most common type of cancer worldwide, and its incidence continues to rise.
Basal Cell Carcinoma (BCC): BCC is the most common type of skin cancer, accounting for about 80% of cases. It typically develops in...

Summary

Dermatologists frequently find skin cancers incidentally. These incidentally detected skin cancers are often smaller and in less visible areas, emphasizing the need for thorough patient examinations for early diagnosis.

Area of Science:

  • Dermatology
  • Oncology
  • Public Health

Background:

  • Skin cancer is a prevalent condition requiring dermatological attention.
  • Incidental findings of skin cancer occur in patients not initially referred for this concern.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To compare characteristics of skin cancers (squamous cell carcinoma, basal cell carcinoma, melanoma) diagnosed in dermatology.
  • To differentiate between lesions found in patients referred for suspected cancer versus incidental findings.

Main Methods:

  • Retrospective analysis of 433 dermatology patients over one year.
  • Comparison of lesion characteristics between two patient groups using Pearson's chi-squared test.

Main Results:

  • Basal cell carcinoma was the most frequent diagnosis (68.4%).
  • Twenty-six percent of malignant skin tumors were detected incidentally.
  • Incidental tumors were smaller, in non-visible areas, and of more recent onset.

Conclusions:

  • A significant rate of skin cancer is diagnosed incidentally.
  • Thorough dermatological examinations are crucial for early skin cancer detection and treatment.
