Summary

Individuals with Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) experience more sexual desire and dysfunction but less satisfaction. Clinicians should assess sexual health in ADHD patients.

Background:

While sexual disorders are common in mental illnesses, little is known about sexuality in individuals with Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD).
Clinical assumptions often link ADHD symptoms to sexual functioning difficulties.

Purpose of the Study:

To systematically review existing literature on sexuality in individuals with ADHD.
To enhance understanding of sexual function and dysfunction in ADHD.
To discuss screening and management strategies for sexual problems in ADHD patients.

Main Methods:

A systematic literature review was conducted.
Databases searched included Pubmed, PsychInfo, and Embase.
Main outcome measures focused on sexual function and sexual dysfunctions.

Main Results:

Individuals with ADHD reported increased sexual desire and masturbation frequency compared to the general population.
Less sexual satisfaction was reported by subjects with ADHD.
A higher prevalence of sexual dysfunctions was observed in individuals with ADHD.

Conclusions:

Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) significantly impacts sexual health.
Clinicians should proactively inquire about and assess the sexual lives of their ADHD patients.
Further research is needed due to the limited number of studies and potential biases.
