Background:

Nursing informatics' historical roots predate computer use in healthcare, emerging earlier than previously understood.
Traditional literature reviews are limited; this study utilized an automated, electronic approach for comprehensive analysis.

Observation:

A Scopus-based literature search identified 3805 nursing informatics publications with 57,057 references.
Fifteen key historical sources were identified, including foundational works and writings by Florence Nightingale.

Findings:

Nursing informatics has evolved from early foundational works to become a distinct research area.
The field demonstrates a responsiveness to global health concerns and has significantly influenced nursing practice and advancements.
Nursing informatics has also impacted and influenced other academic and professional disciplines.

Implications:

Understanding the historical evolution of nursing informatics provides insights into knowledge development within the field.
This systematic approach highlights the interdisciplinary influence and global health relevance of nursing informatics.
The findings underscore the importance of nursing informatics in driving nursing advancements and addressing contemporary health challenges.
