Wrist fusion surgery for non-rheumatoid conditions showed better outcomes with midcarpal arthrodesis compared to radiocarpal arthrodesis. Further research into optimal wrist fusion techniques is warranted.

Area of Science:

  • Orthopedic Surgery
  • Hand Surgery

Background:

  • Wrist arthrodesis is a surgical procedure to fuse the wrist joint.
  • This study evaluates wrist fusions for conditions other than rheumatoid arthritis.

Observation:

  • Seventeen patients underwent wrist fusion, with 5 at the radiocarpal joint and 12 at the midcarpal joint.
  • Average patient age was 42 years, with follow-up averaging 1 year and 10 months.

Findings:

  • Midcarpal fusions demonstrated superior postoperative results compared to radiocarpal fusions.
  • Overall results were excellent in 5 wrists, good in 7, fair in 2, and poor in 3.
  • Complications included pseudoarthrosis and flexor pollicis longus tendon rupture; one patient developed new osteoarthritis.

Implications:

Related Experiment Videos

  • Midcarpal arthrodesis may be a preferred surgical option for specific wrist conditions.
  • Understanding complication rates and long-term joint health is crucial for patient outcomes.
